What Does My Engine Drive Belt Do?

The engine drive belt, also known as the serpentine belt, keeps the engine running smoothly. Your vehicle most likely has one belt, though there are some with dual belt systems. It's a reinforced rubber belt that delivers power to the AC, cooling system, power steering and alternator while your engine is running.

When Should I Change My Engine Drive Belt?

Typically, engine drive belts last for 150,000 miles. They last a long time, but most older cars will need there's replaced before they're scrapped. It's always a possibility that something breaks prematurely, so keep an eye on any issues that arrive.

Signs of a Worn or Damaged Engine Drive Belt

There are a couple of tell-tail signs your engine drive belt is damaged, worn, or otherwise insufficient. See below:

  1. Squealing or whining noise - A noisy belt is most likely a sign of oil on the belt. It might just be moisture, but this is far less common. Belt noise is usually a sign that a replacement is required. DO NOT ignore this - a broken belt can lead to substantial engine damage.
  2. Visual signs - It's always good to check under the hood every once in a while. The engine drive belt is located on the front of the engine. If you notice the belt is cracked, has chunks missing, or looks worn, stop by Ravenswood Auto Center as soon as possible...the belt won't last much longer.
